A Suicide Prevention Training for Faith Community Leaders will be held Tuesday, November 3, at the Lee Dam Fine Arts Center in Marysville. The seminar will be led by David Umanzor of the Soul Shop Movement and sponsored by DCCCA of Kansas.
While the training is designed primarily for leaders serving in faith communities, educators, school counselors and administrators, youth program leaders, and other concerned community members are strongly encouraged to attend. The need is especially important in rural Kansas. Overall and youth suicide rates in rural and less-populated Kansas counties are approximately 50% higher than in urban areas. At the same time, rural communities often have fewer mental health resources available to those who are struggling.
This seminar is designed to equip caring adults to recognize warning signs, respond appropriately, and become part of a community of support for individuals who may be at risk. Participants will gain practical tools and greater confidence in responding to those who may be experiencing a mental health or suicidal crisis.
Registration opens September 14. Early-bird registration is $20, which includes seminar materials and lunch.
